What is PrEP?

  • PrEP stands for Pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP, TENO-EM, is a fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) 300mg and emtricitabine (FTC) 200 mg.
  • In Thailand, it is used as a HIV prevention strategy that keeps HIV negative people from becoming infected even though they are exposed to high HIV risk sex.
  • It is usually taken every day. If you do not take PrEP every day, it may become not as effective as it can be.

Something you should do before taking PrEP

  • Talk to your healthcare provider.
  • You must stay HIV negative before and while taking PrEP. 
  • Get tested with Hepatitis B status, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD),
    liver and renal function.
  • Tell you healthcare provider if you have any bone problems.
  • Any other medical conditions or pregnancy.

Are there different PrEP manufacturer?

  • Yes, there are different PrEP manufacturers. The brand name PrEP TRUVADA and DESCOVY are manufactured by Gilead while generic PrEP is also avaliable.
  • The component of the TRUVADA and TENO-EM are identical. In general, the generic drug is cheaper and more affordable.
  • The generic PrEP is TENO-EM (Thai PrEP) manufactured by GPO, Thailand.
  • If you are currently a brand name drug user, it is ok to change to generic drug.

How to get PrEP?

  • PrEP is a prescription drug in Hong Kong, a drug which can be only prescribed by medical doctors.
  • PrEP is available in private hospitals and clinics.
  • Talk to your healthcare provider and get tested on Hepatitis B status, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD), liver and renal function.
  • Get prescription letter and PrEP medication from medical doctors.
  • You SHOULD NOT purchase PrEP online if you are not sure whether the supplier is legitimate or not. There is always a risk that you might get spurious medication from the unknown supplier. If you want to get PrEP, please contact us.
  • Some people will go overseas for PrEP. However, there is also a risk that you might get spurious medication from unknown clinic. Besides, you CANNOT bring more than three bottles of PrEP back to Hong Kong.

Safety and side effects for PrEP

  • PrEP could incur serious side effects if you do not follow the dosage and safety instruction.
  • Do not share PrEP to others since PrEP could be fetal for certain group of people.
  • Check up regularly to make sure you are suitable to continue the PrEP medication.
  • PrEP could cause side effects. If you do not feel well, consult your healthcare provider at soon as possible.

Tips for PrEP users

  • Take PrEP as prescribed.
  • ONE tablet a day, to ensure enough medication are inside your blood to work against HIV infection. You can take it with or without food. Get it into a routine. If you miss the scheduled dose, take it within that day. If you do not take PrEP every day, it may fail to work effectively and efficiently.
  • Overdose could be harmful.
  • PrEP reaches maximum level of protection against HIV for receptive anal sex at about the 7 days of daily use. For receptive vaginal sex and injection drug use, around 20 days of daily use is required. Please follow your healthcare provider’s advice.
  • Get routine checkup to ensure you are HIV negative and in good health for PrEP. You should combine PrEP with other safer sex practices to get the best protection against HIV. You should know that PrEP does not help you to prevent other sex transmitted disease (STD).

Stopping and restarting PrEP

  • If you want to restart PrEP, you also need to consult your healthcare provider and carry out tests first.
